WORKPLACE CAMPAIGNS
Please note: the deadline to complete and turn in all donation forms for the 2011/2012 United Way Campaign is February 21, 2012.
The United Way raises money for local non-profit agencies from the local community, mainly through employee payroll deductions. See overview (pdf).
23 local agencies depend on United Way for core funding and dozens more receive one-time funding on an annual basis. In 2011/2012, the demands on United Way will be greater than ever given the local economy and pressure on provincial funding.
For a campaign to be effective, your organization will need an Employee Campaign Chair to coordinate the campaign and an Executive Sponsor who can set a corporate goal and make it a corporate priority.
The corporate goal can be a benchmark of total dollars to be raised OR the percentage of employees participating. Participation rate is a particularly motivating goal in the first year as it can be a powerful team builder.
A Thermometer Poster (pdf) can be displayed prominently in a common work area to update employees on the progress of the campaign. (pdf)
The ECC coordinates with your organization’s Human Resources Executive to design a 2-3 week campaign. Here they would decide on timing, how best to celebrate Kickoff corporately, who will get the word out and when to report updates. The Two-week campaign model and critical path documents (pdf) are helpful overviews of the timeline of example United Way Campaigns.
Workplace Campaigns may be as simple or as elaborate as you like. Typical workplace campaigns include a Kickoff, canvassing with incentives such as Early Bird draws and donation increases, special events and a wrap up.
The CEO kicks off the campaign either through a company event or mass email. The Employee Campaign Chair runs the Kickoff event and either canvasses the employees or coordinates a team of canvassers. The CEO sends a thank you to staff once the campaign has wrapped up.
The following documents are provided to each employee by the ECC or by a canvasser (e.g. department manager).
You can use the Campaign Materials Order form (pdf) to request the delivery of United Way posters, balloons, stickers and other items for your campaign.
Supporting documents to help ECC (pdf). These include some facts & figures about the United Way; 10 steps to a successful United Way campaign; and a description of the effect that an Everyday Hero ($1 a day) gift can have in the community.
The Employee Campaign Results Report Form is an interactive pdf which helps your ECC report your campaign’s results to the United Way. Please use this document to add up your campaign’s total donation. Please print this form and include a copy with the (United Way copies of) all your returned donation forms, cheques, cash, etc.
